The August Sturgeon Moon: A Full Moon Preparation and Educational Guide

Have you ever heard of anyone around you raving about how excited or distraught they are about an upcoming full moon? Is this just some New Age trend, or is there any logical or historical relevance as to why we should even look deeper into this subject?

In America’s modern day society, most of us have been exposed to Fictional, Sci-fi, and Fantasy categorized novels/movies. The first thing that may come to one’s mind is that malicious crimes tend to be intensified during this time frame – or…. we might see people morphing into werewolves, right?

Here are a few facts and ideas supporting the significance in full moons based on history and how various life-forms are affected or dependent upon the energetic cycles caused by the moon:

  • The full moon of August is also known as the “Sturgeon Moon,” as many Native Americans knew that sturgeons, (an endangered, valuable, and respectable fish species that could live up to 100 years) were highly abundant on a full moon in August. They considered these fish to be the protectors of wild rice. Natives Americans would use this as an advantage within trade agreements, as sturgeons were the primary food source for Europeans, before commercial fishing policies were put into affect that led to it’s gradual decline.
  • The moon’s gravitation force affects open bodies of water. Western science indicated that it does not affect the water in our bodies as human beings. However, ancient philosophers and Native Americans believed that the moon DOES affect human behavior, by it’s gravitational pull of our bodily fluids. (Knowing that we are comprised mostly of water, and that billions of our cells need water to live is something we can definitely keep an open mind to.)
  • Several philosophers concluded that due to the brain of the human, being the “moistest” organ of the body – is much more susceptible to the mysterious influences of the moon. It’s also been documented that in many places, additional officers are placed on duty in order to combat or deescalate increased crime on a full moon.

How to Prepare for a Full Moon

Now, is a full moon always bad? No. Full moons are also known across the globe as a beautiful experience, not just to the eyes, but as an amplifier to feelings, emotions, and spiritual growth. Think about the moon’s energetic amplification like this – if you are angrier, you may become angrier. If you are happy, you may become happier.

Basically, whatever your innate vibration is – you will get more of that. If you’re open-minded to start exploring nature’s effect on you – it’s important to prepare with a clean slate:

  • Stay away from negative peers or family members.

Gossip, small talk, or negative people in your life is an oppressive force to your consciousness! Take a break from those that you tend to bump heads with, or those          who aren’t supportive of your inner growth. Even if it’s just for one day – energy isn’t always seen but it doesn’t lie!

  • Surround yourself around what makes you happy or relaxed. (positive music, people, a peaceful environment, etc)

Personally, I like to meditate to mid-theta binaural beats for about 10 minutes to put me in a calmer place of being, before I can truly relax. I love the smell of essential oils such as Eucalyptus, Lavender, Sage, or Grapefruit to set the atmosphere of my home. If troubled, practice forgiveness and negate any negative experiences from entering your zone you have created. And most importantly, being around water is ideal. The beautiful sight of it on this special day is an experience that no one can take away from you.

  • Limit yourself to external stimuli and set some time to meditate, or your own preferable way to clear your mind.

Examples of external stimuli of the mind are: over-exposure to technology, television, loud noises, overly crowded environments, etc. Taking a break from outside sources forces your being to look within consciously, by default. You will begin to start noticing things that are happening within, that you may have previously been distracted from subconsciously. This can be a good or bad thing, depending on your inner state of being. Just observe yourself, with no judgement and enjoy the ride.

  • Stay away from high processed sugar and food-like products.

A couple days before the Full Moon you can try to take a break from artificial foods that are embedded especially within the Standard American Diet. By feeding yourself more naturally sustainable foods, you will be more in tune with yourself, your surroundings, and the present moment. We have to remember that we are sensitive beings. Not limited to only people, media, and countless invisible frequencies – but also the food we choose to use as fuel for our bodies. Your body is a transportation device, a vessel – maintain it like you would your first luxurious car.

  • Write a list of everything you are grateful for, and your desires

Since energy is amplified, many people take advantage on Full Moons by manifesting their deepest desires. This is a great time to use your imagination as a gateway of attracting what you want in life. However, the main ingredient many of us seem to forget while practicing manifestation techniques is simply being grateful. Before you focus on your desires, make sure you affirm what you are already grateful for. Otherwise, your point of attraction may be stemming from what you lack.

At the end of the day, only you know yourself the best! Experiment and see what invigorates you and to reap the benefits of the Full Moon of August 2025!
